Sara is the founder of All Families Doula Services and the original Fresno doula on our team. After her son was born in 2012, she decided to finally follow her dream and pursue doulahood. She enrolled in a professional doula training program (Madriella) and became certified in birth in April of 2016. She also started a postpartum training program through the same agency, and is working on finishing her postpartum certification as well.
She is currently participating in the 12 month “Cultured Doula Program” through Gena Kirby University. The program focuses on teaching about birth related stories from a global perspective. Sara was most excited about learning about quantum physics and how the concept can be integrated into childbirth. After completing the program, she is planning on pursuing a Master Rebozo certification from Gena.
In June of 2017 Sara Read The Positive Birth Book and fell in love with it. She applied to start a Positive Birth Movement group in Fresno, and will be holding her first meeting in August. (more details to come!) The Positive Birth Movement is an international grass roots organization that consists of women meeting and collaborating to support ALL birth choices. According to their website , “We break down the walls that the so-called ‘birth wars’ try to build between women. We don’t hold any one kind of birth up above another. We’re just concerned with every woman getting the best possible birth experience, for her, on that day.”
One of Sara’s passions is teen pregnancy. Sara gave an informational speech in downtown Fresno to 25 teen moms as an invited guest of Barrios Unidos in January of 2017. She spoke about the usefulness of doulas and listened to feedback from over 15 teen moms as they talked about their experience of motherhood. (If you are a teen mom seeking assistance please go to http://www.fresnobarriosunidos.org. Furthermore, please also reach out to Sara about special pricing options.)
Sara is currently working on starting a Non Profit Organization in her community. She believes that there is so much opportunity for education about everything birth and postpartum related. She is hoping that the Non Profit Organization will help build awareness around these issues in the greater Fresno area. A few of the first projects she will focus on are: facilitating a baby expo for families who are expecting, holding an annual diaper drive for parents in need, and providing low cost doula care for under-served demographics.
Another one of her passions is education about postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety. Because Sara experienced postpartum anxiety after the birth of her son, she knows the stigma around seeking help. Sara is a vocal advocate in community groups about postpartum mood disorders. As a result, she currently represents the perspective of Fresno doulas on the Maternal Wellness Committee in Fresno, which is a division of the California Health Collaborative.
In her free time, Sara is an avid reader and a huge fan of adult coloring. She has been married for 12 years and has a precocious four year old son. She also has three dogs, 2 outside cats, and 7 fish. Due to her love for animals, Sara has been a vegetarian for 15 years! Furthermore, her guilty pleasures include: staying up way too late watching Netflix and singing loudly (and usually off key) in the car.
